Teacher’s appreciation week and Mother’s Day are both fast approaching. This adorable flower craft that your kids can make is a perfect gift to give to teachers or moms (or both!) during these holidays that celebrate them!
How to Make a Cute Flower Craft to Gift
This flower craft is really simple, and easy to put together. There also are a lot of ways you can personalize it to the person you are giving it to. ie. use their favorite colors, fill with their favorite candy, etc.
So, here are the steps to making this simple, but so adorable flower craft!
Step One: Gather Supplies for Your Flower Craft
You will need….
- Flower pot, vase, pitcher – Whatever your vessel of choice
- Foam Block – I got mine from the dollar store. I found them with the fake flowers
- Colored Cardstock – Alternatively, you can use white and have your kids color the flowers.
- Scissors
- Hole Punch
- Pencils
- Flower Template (Find my Free Printable here!) or flower stencil
- Filler of Choice – We used packets of tea, mints, and chocolate
Optional supplies…
- Ribbon or String
- Paint – For painting your flower pot or flowers
- Mod Podge – To seal the flower pot if you choose to paint it.
- Paper grass for filling in the pot
Step Two: Print Flower Template
To make this little simpler, I have created a flower template that works perfectly for making this flower craft. You can find the template here.
So, the first step is to print this flower template out on card stock. You can use colored card stock, or white and have your kids color each flower. I do suggest using card stock as it holds shape better than regular printer paper. However, if all you have is regular printer paper, that is fine too!
Side note: I do not have a cricuit, so I am not really sure how printing on one works. But I’m sure there is some way to use this template on a cricuit as well.
Step Three: Cut Out Flowers and Holes for Pencil Stems
First, cut out each individual flower with scissors. I had my daughter do all the cutting since it is a gift from her, I wanted her to do as much of it as she can. Not to mention, working with scissors is a really great exercise for fine motor skills.
Second, once all the flowers are cut out use a hole puncher to create the hole for the pencil stems. My hole puncher wasn’t quite long enough to reach the middle of the flower, so I partially folded the flower in half, and punched half a circle on the fold. Then, when unfolded the flower had a full hole punch in the center.
Tip is using the fold method: Fold the flower so the middle circle is facing you, then simply line up the hold punch with the lines. This should give you a perfect circle each time.
Step Four: Attach the Flowers to the Pencil Stem
To create the full flower, stick the eraser side of the pencil through the hole in the center of the paper flower. Pull it through until the flower is sitting on top edge of the metal piece under the eraser. This will create the flower head.
Step Five: Assemble the Flower Bouquet
After your have assembled all the flowers, it is time to make the bouquet!
First, take the piece of foam and place in on a flat surface. Second, stick each pencil into the foam block taking care to push hard enough for the pencil to stay securely, but not too hard that the foam breaks.
Finally, carefully transfer the foam with the completed bouquet to the flower pot.
Step Six: Add The Fillers
To really pull the bouquet together, add the fillers of your choice to the empty spaces of the flower pot. We chose to use green items to make it look like grass, but you can use whatever you think your receiver will enjoy! You can also opt to use paper grass if you don’t want to add anything extra.
Filler ideas for teachers:
- Tea
- Hard Candy
- Mints
- Gum
- Chocolate
- Drink flavor packets
- Gift Cards (Coffee, Amazon, Target, Restaurant, Etc)
- Hair Ties or Clips
- Chapstick
Filler ideas for moms:
- Flower Seeds
- Tea
- Chocolate
- Mints
- Hard Candy
- Chapstick
- Nail Polish
- Gift Cards
Finally, when you’ve chosen your fillers, fill in the empty space in the pot around the flowers to give your flower craft a finished look.
Step Seven: Attach Ribbon and Card to the Flower Pot
If you are not adding a ribbon or card to your gift, then you can stop at step six. However, I think this adds a nice extra touch to your gift. Ribbon is one of those craft supplies that I keep in the house so it really wasn’t a big deal to add.
I hole punched a hole in the corner of the card my daughter made for her teacher, and then just laced it through the ribbon. Finally, I tied the ribbon around the pot, finished it off with a small bow, and that’s it!
It turned out so cute, and my daughter can not wait to take it to her teacher!
Inexpensive Flower Craft Gift
I purchased most of my supplies at the dollar store, and other things I found at a local discount store. All together, we spent about 20 dollars on the whole thing.
Gifts don’t have to be expensive to be an awesome gift. In particular, this is extra special because it is hand made by someone the receiver loves!
All in all, we had so much fun making this together, and it turned out so cute! I think we will actually make them again for Mother’s Day!
