Easter family traditions can be fun, simple, and still not add extra stress to your plate. There is a lot of pressure these days to make everything picture perfect, and honestly it can be really overwhelming. But here’s the thing, I think every moment is worthy of being remembered and shared. Life is beautiful, even the imperfect moments. Instead of spending so much time trying to make every moment “perfect”, let’s just focus on being in the moment, and actually enjoying it.
That being said, these are some of my favorite Easter family traditions. Nothing is over the top or extravagant, but every year holds so many memories. In my opinion, that is what really matters.
So Here We Go! Easter Family Traditions to Start With Your Family
Read the Resurrection Story From The Bible
Not only is this my favorite of our Easter family traditions, but it’s the most important. Easter festivities are fun, but I always like to make sure we remember why we celebrate Easter, and the amazing sacrifice Christ made for us.
There are several passages in scripture where you can find the resurrection story in the Bible. Matthew 28: 1-20 is the passage we read to remember the Easter story and God’s love for us. After reading the passage, we take some time to pray and thank the Lord for all that he has done for us.
Take a Family Photo
Easter is a great time to snag a family photo! Everyone usually dresses so nicely and the weather is beautiful! A simple family selfie, or a self timer portrait is just as good as a professional photo. Don’t feel pressure to spend a bunch of money to have someone take photos for you (unless you want to. That’s great too!). I love professional family photos, however they are rarely in the budget these days. Not to mention, I think there is a lot less pressure on everyone when we keep family photos low-key and simple.
It’s fun to look back each year and see how everyone has grown since the last year’s photo. You will never regret taking a family photo. It doesn’t matter if everyone smiles perfectly, you have matching outfits, or you have the highest of quality camera. Photos are beautiful memories no matter what, and this is one of those Easter family traditions you can enjoy for many years after.
Dye Easter Eggs
Dyeing Easter eggs is just plain fun. I can’t explain it, but it is! My grandma always dyed Easter eggs with us when we were kids, and those are some of my favorite memories. Everyone gathered together at the table, to see what they can create on an egg. We had so much fun showing off our creations, and of course eating the eggs later! (Making deviled eggs is a great way to use the eggs after you’ve dyed them!)
Dyeing Easter eggs is a tradition, I have been wanting to do with my kids for a few years now, but they are young and the thought of the mess that would come with it kept me from doing so. However, this year, we dyed Easter eggs with whipped cream and it was a huge hit with the kids! We had a bunch of fun seeing how the eggs turned out, and it was a great sensory activity too!
Make Easter Baskets
Personally, I love making Easter baskets for my kids. I thoroughly enjoy finding little things that I know will bring them some joy.
Now, I know there is a lot of pressure online these days to make these extravagant, expensive, and photo worthy baskets for our children. But I want to encourage you to push that aside, and do what works for you. Easter baskets can be simple and fun. Make the kids your number one thought instead of what other moms might think of the basket you put together.
A few simple, and inexpensive basket filler ideas:
- Stickers
- Puzzle
- Coloring Book or Paint with Water Book
- Crayons
- Book or Magazine
- Bubbles
- Sidewalk Chalk
- Jump Rope
- Snacks
- Balloons
- Glow Sticks
- Small Stuffed Animal or Toy
- Playground Ball
- Cereal
- A Sweet Treat – suckers, chocolate, gummy candy, etc.
Easter Egg Hunt
This is another Easter Tradition that I have a lot of fun with. My kids have so much fun looking for Easter eggs, and are so excited when they find one. I love watching them help each other find the eggs, and they are so thrilled when they open them up and discover the treasures inside.
I know the amount of candy kids get on different holidays can be really frustrating and/or overwhelming. You can also fill Easter eggs with non-candy items. Usually, I fill a few with candy, but the majority of the eggs get filled with non-food items. The dollar store, or the party favor section is a great place to find Easter egg fillers.
Non- candy Easter egg filler ideas:
- Stickers – I typically buy a pack of stickers and the cut out individual stickers so that they fit into the egg. You can also hide extra eggs this way!
- Punch Balloons – Punch balloons are so much fun! I always stuff a punch balloon in a few eggs, and the kids love them. They are also inexpensive, and you get several in one pack. If you can’t find punch balloons, you can use regular balloons too.
- Bouncy balls – Bouncy balls are just fun for everyone. You can usually find a pack of smaller bouncy balls that fit perfectly in an Easter egg.
- Hair Ties or Hair Clips – This might be a girl mom thing, but we can never have too many of these in the house. Hair accessories make great Easter eggs fillers!
- Erasers – You can find fun shaped erasers that double for arts and crafts, and kids can play with them.
- Small animal figures – Alternatively to erasers, you can use small animal figures. Kids love playing with these types of toys, and they are great for building imagination!
“Egg” A Friends House – Easter egg
When I say egg a friend’s house, I don’t mean throw raw eggs at their house and vehicle. Please do NOT do that! Instead Easter egg their house! Place filled Easter eggs all over your friend’s front yard, for their kids to find.
It’s always fun to give, and do something else for others. Get your kids in on the egg filling, and let them choose what to put in the eggs for their friends. Your kids will have so much fun putting together an egg hunt for someone else.
After you’ve assembled all your eggs, write a little note to leave on their front door (this helps them know the eggs are safe, and not left by some stranger!). Then pay a quick visit to your friends house to drop the eggs and run!
