Do you ever feel like you’re always doing laundry? No matter if you have one child or six, laundry just seems to be never-ending. (How do such small people produce SO MUCH laundry?!) While I can’t lessen your laundry load, I can help make it a little easier with my laundry hacks for moms.
Laundry Hacks to Make Doing Laundry a Little Easier
First, I know the word “hack” gets overused a lot, and some things really don’t seem like hacks at all. However, I chose to use the word hack for simplicity’s sake. So if the use of the word hack bothers you, I apologize in advance! Haha!
Between my three kids, my husband, and myself I do A LOT of laundry. Sometimes I feel like the second I stop doing laundry it just takes over my house. I have tried splitting laundry up into certain days, doing a load every day, or just spending one entire day a week doing a marathon of laundry. And honestly, none of these methods are perfect. It really is just finding what works best for you.
We live in a small home, so I prefer to do a load every day or a couple loads every other day. And while I don’t love doing laundry everyday, this method helps me stay on top of it and keeps the laundry from taking over every inch of our house.
1. Get a good stain remover
It’s no secret that kids are messy, and stains are inevitable. And if you have a really good and trustworthy stain remover, stains really won’t stress you out as much.
After trying a million different kinds of stain removers over the years, I have found my ride or die stain remover.
Oxy-Clean Spray works every single time. And I’ll be honest, I don’t even follow the directions to a T. I simply spray the stained area, and toss it in the wash. Easy day! I also typically use a scoop of oxy-powder in each load of kid’s laundry as well. (I personally think the Up & Up brand works even better than the name brand.)
This combined with my free and clear laundry detergent has worked very well for me!
2. Have fewer laundry baskets
Now before you think I am a total lunatic, hear me out! The less laundry baskets you have to hold all the clean laundry, the more likely you are to put the laundry away. Think of it as a weird form of motivation!
3. Stop folding kid’s laundry
One of the best things I have done for myself was stop folding the kids laundry. It is so frustrating when you take the time to fold the laundry, and put it away neatly only for the kids to unfold it all while rummaging for the item they want.
I am all for letting my kids pick their own clothes, and dress themselves. So I just decided to stop folding them all together. This saves my time folding and refolding kids clothes, and it makes it so much easier for them to help me put their clothes away.
I will give some more details about this and how I make it work, below.
4. Have a designated space for kids to put their dirty clothes
First let me preface this by saying that kids will not always put their dirty clothes in the basket. In a perfect world they would, but let’s manage our expectations here.
However, I have found that having a designated place for them to put their dirty clothes really helps them be more successful. I keep the “dirty clothes basket” in a place that is easily accessible for all the kids to access and it stays there. That way when I ask my kids to put their clothes in the basket, they know exactly where to take it every time.
Another thing I think that helps is using an open basket, rather than one with a lid. This really makes it easier for kids to put their clothes in the basket. I do realize that for some this may be considered an eye-sore, so again do what works best for you! And if you have older kids, having a lid may not be a big deal.
Laundry Hacks: My No Fold Laundry System
I have been using my no fold laundry system for a little over a month now. And I am LOVING it! Not having to fold a million pieces of tiny clothes saves me so much time, and frustration. I haven’t had any issues with things being wrinkly. (Although I do still hang dresses and other “nicer” clothes in the closet.) The kids are still able to easily find the things they want. And it’s just been really nice all around. I highly recommend it!
That being said, there are different ways to go about doing a no fold laundry system. However, this is what I have been doing, and loving.
1. Use a Cube Shelf Organizer
Before switching to my no fold laundry system, I was using plastic storage drawers for my kid’s clothes. I just never got around to buying dressers, and the drawers always lived in a closet so it was working fine. However, what sparked a change was the kids unfolding everything when they were looking for something in particular.
Spending time folding and putting away clothes only to have it messed up five minutes later was frustrating. Messy drawers with everything just shoved in made it hard for me to put clean clothes away, and would result in me refolding everything… and repeat the cycle. *SCREAM* haha!
When I decided to switch to a no fold system, I purchased cube shelf organizers with bins to replace my plastic storage drawers. Each one of my children, has four cube bins for their clothes and that has worked very well for my kiddos.
2. Label Each Bin
I have seen some people use a no fold laundry system where they just throw everything in one bin and call it a day. Personally, I knew this was not the right direction for me. All I could picture was my kids digging through one large bin looking for something and throwing everything on the floor. Yikes!
So I decided to label each bin with certain items to make it easier for my kids to find exactly what they need. This has also made it it easier for them to put things away where they go.
These are the labels I have been using on my kids bins:
- Socks and Underwear
- Pants
- Shirts
- Pajamas
Now because I have some kids who do not read yet, I went ahead and put images on my labels to help them be more successful when putting things away or looking for something in particular.
I have included a few printable labels below!
Labels for bins with a label pocket (As pictured above)
Photos to add to writable labels (This is what I have on my bins and labels)
3. Different Colored Bins For Multiple Kids
Because my kids share rooms, I chose to give each child a different colored bins. This makes it so that they can easily identify which one is theirs.
I realize that this may not be some people’s cup of tea. Especially if you prefer a certain aesthetic and everything to match. So once again, do whatever works for you! Personally, it doesn’t bother me that things don’t match perfectly.
I let my kids each pick the color they wanted at the store, and this method has worked well!
